One way people quit is to cut down gradually over 3-4 weeks. If you are smoking 1 pack a day, cut down to 1/2 pack on week one, 1/4 pack on week two, 3 cigarettes week three and 1 cigarette a day on week four, and week five is no cigarettes for the rest of your life!
Another strategy is to use nicotine replacement therapy. Nicotine is the most addicting drug there is, and smokers who have a difficult time with the withdrawal can use a nicotine patch or nicotine gum. The nicotine is cut back gradually, over a 6-12 week time period until the smoker has gotten used to not having the cigarette. The nicotine patch and gum are still very addicting, but they help by decreasing the amount of nicotine used over a period of time. It is important not to smoke when using the patch. The physical act of having a cigarette to carry is also very dependence producing. People can carry lollipops, carrot and celery sticks, anything that can be put in their mouths to take the place of the cigarette.
Exercise is extremely useful when quitting. Exercise releases chemicals in the brain which can decrease stress and nervousness. This helps with the addiction and withdrawal. Exercise will also help cleanse the body of the poisons from cigarettes. Exercise will also decrease appetite and weight gain. Ex-smokers often gain weight when they quit, and by exercising they can make sure this doesn’t happen.
Drinking lots of water and eating healthy is very important. Water flushes out the toxins which have built up in the body. Water also decreases appetite. Eating healthy will make you feel better and may decrease craving for nicotine.
Alcohol and coffee may trigger the desire to smoke. Some people crave smoking when they drink. Smoking makes the liver break down alcohol and caffeine as well as other drugs. It is very important to cut down on coffee and caffeine at least by 50% when you quit smoking.
