LESSON 3

Tobacco

OBJECTIVES

Students should:

• Know the harmful effects of tobacco

• Comprehend how tar and nicotine cause high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke

• Understand the personal, societal, and economic effects of tobacco addiction

• Explain how the tobacco companies gain political power through making money and creating new nicotine addicts

• Have the ability to teach someone else the health, political, economic and cosmetic effects of tobacco use

• Examine advertising and its effects on creating new customers (see lesson 5)

TIME: 45-90 minutes

SUPPLIES: In-DEPTH Workbooks

BACKGROUND:

Before the lesson ask students to look through magazines for an assortment of tobacco advertising. This will be used in the next two lessons more extensively. Students should either read the tobacco chapter before class, read quietly by themselves, or read the chapter aloud. There is information about quitting tobacco use, both in English and in Spanish, at the end of the lesson. This can be xeroxed and given to students to share with their family, friends, etc. This information needs to be handled very carefully. We want to make sure students approach smokers about quitting in a polite, understanding manner. You should also review selling skills with students. See: worksheet about teaching students how to approach others about quitting smoking.

*Note: If you are only covering tobacco or would like more tobacco evaluation data, pre and post tests are included. They are located at the end of the section on quitting tobacco.

ACTIVITY-1

1. Teacher should highlight important points through lecture-style presentation

2. Students should break into groups of four students and discuss reasons for not smoking (one student covers political reasons, one covers cosmetic reasons one covers economic reasons and one cover health reasons) for not smoking

3. Student groups should answer questions at the back of the chapter

3. Students should discuss the answers with the class

ACTIVITY-2

1. Students should work on "Mr. Johnson worksheet" to show the economic effects of smoking (show picture of lungs from the end of curriculum guide)

2. Review: Using Quit Smoking materials and reviewing how students should approach others

ACTIVITY-3 (Optional) Students may work on puzzles or word searches
