OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM
The In-DEPTH Program has designed two unique training
techniques to make the program successful: Target Teaching and Selling
Skills. Successful implementation of the program uses a 'Trainers of
Trainers' model which includes peer coaching, classroom modeling and
positive reinforcement. Evaluations are used throughout the training
to ensure that teachers are comfortable with the information,
and that students are receiving the tools they need to facilitate
positive changes.
Target Teaching
Target Teaching uses a needs assessment approach.
Teachers collect and analyze information about students' behaviors,
beliefs and attitudes toward violence, tobacco, alcohol and other drug
use as well as drug dealing. Teachers 'target' and tailor messages to
change students beliefs and behaviors. By providing truthful and meaningful
educational information from economic, health and social perspectives,
the program can change students' misguided beliefs and negative behaviors.
The "Target Teaching" process stimulates critical and logical thinking
while counteracting destructive behaviors.
Selling Skills
Selling Skills are the same technique and
process used to sell products. Teachers use "selling skills" to counteract
positive drug and tobacco advertising and marketing. The teacher counteracts
"objections" (arguments given by participants contrary to the healthful
and correct information given by the teacher) by using the "selling
skills" process. The teacher "sells" anti-tobacco and anti drug messages
by creating a variety of interdisciplinary lessons that relate to students'
various learning styles and beliefs. The "selling skills" model can
break down denial and create positive changes in behavior.
